Rugby Leading Hookers

A rugby league hooker plays in a very similar role to the half-back, harrying his team forward, being a creative lynchpin as well as possessing supreme levels of fitness to play as much of the 80 minutes as possible.

The longer a hooker stays on the field, the higher his side's chances of winning. It is as simple as that.

St Helens' Kieron Cunningham is the current undoubted star in the position. Although he has never set the game alight on an international level, his longevity and skill for the Saints in the Super League has been second to none.

Since its inception in 1996 St Helens have been the most successful side in the Super League.

In its 13-year existence St Helens have topped the League on six occasions and won the Grand Final five times.

Indeed, the first ever Super League winners were St Helens as they finished top of the table. That system stayed in place for two years before the play-offs and Grand Final were introduced.

In 1998 Wigan finished top of the table and went on to make the Grand Final, where they beat the Leeds Rhinos 10-4.

The National League or the Championship as it is now known has only existed since 2003, but the idea of a two-tier league system dates back to the early 20th century.

At first teams were divided by regions into the Yorkshire League and Lancashire League, but that idea lasted just four years before they were decided on merit and not geography.

At first the most successful sides in the Yorkshire and Lancashire Leagues broke away to form a single competition, with the rest making up a Second Division.

Batley Bulldogs Rugby League

Like many National League clubs Batley Bulldogs have to go back a long way for their golden era.

They were one of the original 22 clubs to form the Northern Rugby Union in 1895 and got off to a brilliant start, winning the Challenge Cup three times in the first five years of the tournament's existence.

In 1897 they beat St Helens 10-3 in the final at Leeds and retained the trophy when they overcame Bradford 7-0 at the same venue the following year. They then lifted the Challenge Cup for a third and final time in 1901 after a 6-0 win over Warrington at Leeds.
