Saints versus Wigan called off

St Helens claim they had no alternative but to call off Sunday's friendly against Wigan Warriors on safety grounds.

The traditional pre-season game at Knowsley Road was called off on Sunday morning due to concerns surrounding the condition of the approaches to the stadium following the recent cold weather.

"Even though there has been a significant thaw, the roads leading to the ground and pathways are still covered in ice and therefore aren't safe," explained Saints safety officer Bob Singleton.

"The car park is particularly hazardous and therefore we had no option than to call it off.

Burrow ready for new season

Leeds Rhinos star Rob Burrow is determined to make up for the disappointment of missing out on England's Four Nations campaign at the end of last season.

The 27-year-old half-back was overlooked by coach Tony Smith, who instead favoured Richie Myler and Kyle Eastmond.

However, Burrow is ready and raring to go with a new Super League season a matter of weeks away.

He told The Sun: "Sometimes you have to go backwards before you go forwards.

"It was disappointing, but you have to get over it and quickly.

Hull confirm Raynor exit

Hull FC have confirmed that winger Gareth Raynor has left the club by mutual consent, despite having another year left on his contract at the KC Stadium.

The 32-year-old had been with the club since 2001, having previously had spells with Leeds Rhinos and rugby union outfit Leeds Tykes.

In the last year he has been troubled by foot problems, with a number of off-field issues also hindering his progress.

Chief Executive James Rule told the club's official website: "Gareth has had a long and distinguished career with the club.

Meanwhile, Potter has admitted he has half an eye on the future after also including the likes of promising youngsters Jamie Foster, Chris Dean, Jonny Lomax, Gary Wheeler and Paul Clough.

"The team that will face Wigan certainly has one eye to the future," he explained.

Brown expects Giants rise

Huddersfield Giants head coach Nathan Brown is confident that his side can improve on an impressive campaign last season and finish higher than third in the Super League.

Brown led the Giants to a superb campaign last time around, with the fine league finish backed up by the club reaching the Challenge Cup Final.

Since then Brown has drafted in the likes of St Helens second rower Lee Gilmour, New Zealand international David Fa'alogo and Wakefield duo Brad Drew and Scott Grix.

He told the Huddersfield Examiner: "We are definitely advanced on where we were at this stage last year.

Brown tips Giants to improve

Head coach Nathan Brown believes an improved Huddersfield Giants squad can better last season's third-placed finish in the Super League.

The West Yorkshire club only finished behind traditional powerhouses Leeds Rhinos and St Helens in the league last season and also reached the Final of the Challenge Cup.

But despite the relative success of the last campaign, Australian coach Brown believes an improvement could be on the cards.

"We're definitely advanced on where we were at this stage last year," said Brown, who has added players of the calibre of Lee Gilmour from Saints and New Zealand in

"They're adapting well to life within the Crusaders 2010 system," said a club spokesman.

Platt eyes number one jersey

Full-back Michael Platt has set his sights on reclaiming the number one jersey at Bradford Bulls during the forthcoming Super League season.

The 25-year-old former Salford City Reds, Rochdale Hornets and Castleford Tigers star saw team-mate Dave Halley emerge as the first-choice full-back at Odsal last season but is determined to stake his own claim when the new campaign kicks off in the spring.

"They say ignore the numbers but they do matter," said Platt.
