Kearney ready to fill Orford void

Brett Kearney is ready to step into the breach and play scrum-half for Bradford Bulls following the season-ending injury to Matt Orford.

Orford has been told his Super League campaign is over with a shoulder injury which requires surgery.

That has left a major hole in the Bradford line-up but one which Australian Kearney is keen to fill.

The 26-year-old has already played at stand-off and full-back since arriving at Odsal from Cronulla during the close-season.

"Without Ox there, someone has to stand up and do it and I'm quite happy to be that person," he said.

"You've just got to adapt to

Tickle commits future to Hull

England forward Danny Tickle has put pen to paper on a new three-year contract with Hull FC.

The 27-year-old former Halifax and Wigan second-row's current deal was set to run out at the end of the season, but Tickle has now pledged his long-term future to the KC Stadium outfit.

He told the club's official website: "It is a decision I wanted to take some time over and it has been on my mind a lot recently.

"I had to consider what was best for me and my family.

Mathers opts to leave Wolves

Former Leeds Rhinos star Richard Mathers will leave Warrington Wolves at the end of this season after rejecting the offer of a 12-month extension to his current contract at the Halliwell-Jones Stadium.

The 26-year-old joined Warrington from Wigan Warriors just over a year ago but is expected to lose the full-back spot to Brett Hodgson next season.

Wolves coach Tony Smith has already wrapped up the signing of Hodgson, who was named the Man of Steel last year, from Huddersfield Giants for the 2011 campaign.

"He hasn't taken the option of another year," Smith told the Warrington Guardian.

Crusaders' Witt out for the season

Australian half-back Michael Witt will play no more part in Crusaders' season after damaging knee ligaments in the 50-22 defeat at Harlequins earlier this month.

The 26-year-old has been one of the Welsh side's best players so far this year, with his displays helping to propel Brian Noble's team to six Super League victories in 2010.

However, Witt, who moved to Wrexham from New Zealand rugby union side Otago in the close season and has kicked 35 goals and scored six tries in his 17 appearances, has been told he is unlikely to play again this year.

Crusaders are also currently without Witt's

England play in honour of Purdham

England will take on a Cumbrian representative team in a fund-raiser for Garry Purdham, who died in the recent gun massacre.

Purdham, a former Whitehaven and Workington player and brother of Harlequins captain Rob, was killed by gunman Derrick Bird during the shooting spree Cumbria earlier this month.

The match will take place Whitehaven's Recreation Ground on Sunday, October 3.

"All the Super League players knew of Garry from playing with or against his brother Rob, the Harlequins RL captain, and I'm sure they will want to put on a good show on October 3," explained England captain Steve M

New Bradford deal for Sykes

England international Paul Sykes has pledged his future to Bradford Bulls for a further three seasons.

The Dewsbury-born centre has been an ever-present in the Super League for the Bulls this season.

"I'm really happy here and I'm delighted to get a new contract," said Sykes, who returned to Odsal for a second spell from Harlequins in 2008.

"I was here before and it's been three years now since I came back from Harlequins.

Season ends early for Orford

Australian scrum-half Matt Orford will not play for Bradford Bulls again this season after being forced to undergo shoulder surgery.

The 32-year-old has made a huge impact since his arrival from Manly Sea Eagles, but has been forced to sit out recent games due to the problem.

Bulls head coach Steve McNamara told the club's official website: "It's a huge disappointment for him.

Walters content despite defeat

Catalans Dragons head coach Kevin Walters was content with his side's performance despite the French side suffering a 24-20 defeat at Castleford Tigers.

Walters' squad had several men nursing knocks from France's loss to England last weekend, but they gave a fully committed display at The Jungle.

Walters said: "We've got some bruised bodies in there, probably more so than the Test. It was a physical game.

"You can't fault their effort again. They were very good backing up from Saturday.

Webster to endure hip operation

Hull KR coach Justin Morgan has not given up hope that Jake Webster could return to action before the end of the season even after the centre was told he would need hip surgery.

The former New Zealand international picked up the injury during the recent 24-6 victory over Catalans Dragons, his first game back after missing two weeks with the same problem.

He is now expected to be sidelined until September with Morgan saying: "It wasn't possible to manage Jake's injury on a weekly basis.

"It is likely he will need an operation and it looks like he could be out for ten to 12 weeks.

Monaghan happy to stay with Wolves

Australian hooker Michael Monaghan has pledged his future to Warrington Wolves by agreeing a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2013 season.

The 30-year-old joined the Wolves from Manly Sea Eagles two-and-a-half years ago and has been one of the club's most consistent performers in that time.

Warrington head coach Tony Smith said of Monaghan: "I'm delighted, as is everyone at the club, that Michael has agreed to extend his contract.

"There's no doubt in my mind that he's one of the best, if not the best, hooker in the current Super League competi
