Rugby World Cup 1995

For 1995 the World Cup returned to a hosted tournament format, doubling in size to include 10 teams, with Fiji, Tonga, Western Samoa, South Africa taking part for the first time and Great Britain split into England and Wales.

It proved an inspired decision as a celebration of 100 years of rugby league, because although the minnows were largely uncompetitive, the novelty value of the minor nations led to an upsurge in interest.

With Wales based in the Principality and including a number of former rugby union stars such as Jonathan Davies, Scott Quinnell and Scott Gibbs, the Dragons marched to the semi-finals, defeating France and Western Samoa comfortably.

In Group Two Tonga came closest to producing the shock of the tournament, going down by just one point, 24-25, in the opening match against New Zealand. The Kiwis had an easier time against Papua New Guinea to go through to the semi-finals.

In Group One England kicked off the tournament in fine style at Wembley, defeating Australia 20-16 before going on to comfortable wins over Fiji and South Africa. Unsurprisingly, the Kangaroos picked themselves up to set up a semi-final against New Zealand.

A brave Welsh effort at Old Trafford in the semi-final against England was not enough to prevent the hosts going through to the final, as a brace of tries from Martin Offiah saw them home 25-10, while Australia required extra-time to see off New Zealand, converting a 20-20 full time score into a 30-20 win.

The final took place at Wembley again and although England stayed in touch for long periods, a second-half touchdown from Tim Brasher ensured the trophy remained in Australia hands as they triumphed 16-8.
