Wigan Warriors Rugby League

As sporting rivalries go there are not many bigger than the one between Wigan and St Helens - and currently Wigan are on the wrong end of it.

While Wigan were almost invincible in the late 1980s to mid-1990s, the boot is now on the other foot as Saints carry off trophy after trophy.

In the seven years leading up to the start of the Super League in 1996 Wigan won the League Championship every season.

The 1992 campaign was especially notable as they romped to the League title, with Britain aces Shaun Edwards and Martin Offiah scoring an incredible 10 tries each against Swinton and Leeds respectively.

Yet since the inception of the Super League Wigan have been restricted to just one crown - in 1998.

Nevertheless, the Wigan Warriors are a proud club with a distinguished history, having won 18 League titles and registered 17 Challenge Cup triumphs.

Before the glory run of the 1980s and 1990s Wigan enjoyed a post-War boom when they captured five titles between 1945 and 1959 and four Challenge Cups. The 1948 final, when they beat Bradford Northern 8-3, was the first game of rugby league to be televised.
