Wakefield Trinity Wildcats Rugby League

Harold Poynton will for ever be revered in Wakefield's history, as it was he who captained the side to their first League title in 1966.

Trinity had lifted the Challenge Cup five times before they finally captured the League. Having waited so long to win it once, they retained it the following year.

Boasting stars such as Neil Fox, Don Fox, Gary Cooper and Ray Owen, Wakefield then looked to go one better in 1968 and carry off the League and Challenge Cup double.

However, in a match known as the 'Water Splash Final' due to the torrential downpour during the game, Don Fox missed an easy conversion and Leeds won 11-10.

Since the 1960s the Wildcats have not won any major silverware and when Super League came along, they failed to make the cut for the inaugural season.

However, under coach Andy Kelly Wakefield achieved promotion in 1998 and have since spent many seasons flirting with relegation.

When the new licensing rules were introduced, the Wildcats were one of the teams under threat of not being awarded Super League status - but they won a reprieve and will now stay in the League until at least 2012.

While the future on the pitch is secure, the future off it is not so certain, as their current ground, Belle Vue, has been deemed unsuitable for Super League.

The local council had been thought to favour building a ground in the Thornes Park area of the town, but that is not now feasible, leaving the club's future up in the air.
