Rugby Doncaster

Doncaster are one of Yorkshire's newer rugby league clubs not being established until 1951 (the majority were formed at the end of the 19th century)

However, generally it has not been a happy existence. Indeed, between 1956 and 1985 the club very rarely avoided bottom place in the League.

There was some respite in the early 1990s, though, when they were promoted to Division One in 1994 and at one period were top of the table the following season.

However, it did not last, as they were relegated at the end of the campaign and the club went into liquidation in 1995 after the Tattersfield stadium was sold to housing developers.

The following year the Doncaster Dragons were formed from the ruins of the previous club and had to start life in the bottom division.

Despite the new name, Doncaster again threatened to go out of business in 2001, but were saved by businessman John Wright.

The Yorkshire club then underwent another name change, dropping 'Dragons' and replacing it with 'Lakers' in 2005.

The same year Doncaster were hit by tragedy when their long-serving head coach, St John Ellis, died aged only 41.

However, they eventually achieved Ellis' dream in 2008, when now sharing the state-of-the-art Keepmoat Stadium with their football neighbours - Britain legend Ellery Hanley guided Doncaster to an 18-10 success over Oldham in the National League Two Grand Final before resigning.
