Barrow Raiders Rugby League

The 1950s have without doubt been the highlight of Barrow's history as they reached the Challenge Cup final on three occasions in that decade – in 1951, 1955 and 1957.

Despite having a team packed with stars, though, they managed to win the trophy only once, in 1955, when Willie Horne captained them to a 21-12 success over Workington Town.

After the 1957 final the glory years ended when most of the players retired and in 1961-62, when the League split into two, Barrow dropped into the Second Division.

However, despite being in the Second Division, Barrow did manage one more Wembley appearance - 1967 - when they lost 17-12 to Featherstone Rovers in the final.

By the time the Super League came around in the mid-1990s Barrow were due to merge with Whitehaven, Workington Town and Carlisle to form a new club called Cumbria and play in the top flight – but the move never happened.

Coach Peter Roe won the club's first piece of silverware for 20 years when he led the Raiders to the National League Two Championship in 2004 – but they were relegated in 2005 after just one win.

They regained their place in the National League One, though, when they gained promotion in 2008 after finishing second.
