Living in the Shadows of Rugby Union

France's rugby league side - or the "Les Chanteclairs" as they are more popularly known - consist mainly of players plying their trade with Super League side Catalans Dragons.

The sport in France has always lived in the shadow of rugby union, but thanks to the entrance of the Dragons into the northern hemisphere's biggest league competition, the 13-a-side code has prospered and the national side with it. For example, in the 2008 World Cup Dragons' players made up exactly half of France's entire squad.

If one word was to sum up France's approach to the sport, though, it would be bruising. They have some enormous players in the shape of props Remi Casty and skipper Jerome Guisset, second rows Olivier Elima and Eric Anselme, whilst also relying on the likes of Thomas Bosc and Mathieu Griffi to add some flair.

Recent Resurgence

France's recent resurgence has been helped by the introduction of Australian-born players such as Justin Murphy and John Wilson, who both qualify to play for France through residency. Murphy and Wilson bring a touch of Australian experience and toughness to the French national side aided and abetted by head coach John Monie, who is a fellow Aussie.

He has a host of coaching experience with clubs such as Wigan Warriors, Auckland Warriors and most recently he assisted Brisbane Broncos' legendary coach, Wayne Bennett.
